Kasper Schmeichel: Leicester keeper ready for Nice medical after deal reached | Transfer Center News

Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is expected to sign for French club Nice.

The 35-year-old Denmark international will undergo a medical with the Ligue 1 club in the next 24-48 hours after an agreement was reached between the clubs.

Speaking over the weekend, Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers admitted Schmeichel would be allowed to end his 11-year spell at the King Power Stadium if he found a new club.

Foxes captain Schmeichel was a mainstay throughout the most successful period in the club’s history, winning the Championship and promotion in 2013/14, the Premier League title in 2015/16 and the FA Cup and the Community Shield in 2021.

Schmeichel is expected to follow in the footsteps of former Arsenal, Juventus and Rangers midfielder Aaron Ramsey, who moved to the south of France following the termination of his contract with Juventus.

News of Schmeichel’s impending departure comes amid speculation linking James Maddison, Wesley Fofana, Harvey Barnes and Youri Tielemans at Leicester’s exit door, while reports have been heightened by the Foxes’ inability to make summer signings .

Amid reports linking him with a move to France, Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel says the club has become his family as he reflects on his time in the East Midlands so far.

Newcastle submit improved £50m Maddison bid

Newcastle United have made a second offer of around £50m for Leicester midfielder Maddison.

The Magpies are awaiting a response to their improved offer for the 25-year-old, after their opening bid of £40m was rejected at the weekend.

Leicester are believed to value Maddison, who joined the Foxes for £24m from Norwich in June 2018, at over £60m.

Should Newcastle’s offer be accepted, Maddison would become the club’s record signing – eclipsing the £40million they paid Hoffenheim for Joelinton in July 2019.

Maddison scored 18 goals and provided 12 assists in 53 appearances in all competitions for Leicester last season.

Immobile Leicester, an ominous sign?

Sky Sports News senior reporter Melissa Reddy speaking on The Transfer Show:

“The problem for Leicester is that they are the only Premier League club that have not strengthened their senior squad so far, and they are not the only experienced player who could potentially leave.

“When you look at this team and think about the injuries they’ve suffered, you think they’re a group that needs some freshening up.

“If there are going to be fundamental player exits – Kasper Schmeichel, James Maddison, maybe Wesley Fofana – without solidifying the squad and sanctioning those exits, I’m actually a bit worried about Brendan Rodgers.

“Leicester’s expectation is that they should push in and around the Champions League places but they have stood still which is not a good indication of how they will perform this season.

“There’s been a lot of talk that they need to let players go before they can invest, and eventually they’ll know their targets. They’re great sellers and they’ve recruited well in the past.”
