Oculus was the most downloaded app this Christmas – Quartz

The holiday season has been auspicious for Meta Platforms, Facebook’s parent company which recently changed its name to tout its commitment to building the Metaverse.

Downloads of the app to support Oculus, Meta’s virtual reality brand, hit the top of the mobile app store charts after Christmas, suggesting its headsets were popular giveaways this year. Prior to this week, Oculus was among the top 10 iOS apps in one country, the United States, but on December 26, it became one of the top five apps in 14 different countries and the top app in the United States, according to Justin Patterson, an equity researcher. analyst at KeyBanc Capital Markets. The application has exceeded Google play store on Android devices as well.

Oculus was downloaded 1.3 million times globally between December 21 and 27 between the two major app markets, according to app analytics company Sensor Tower, a 363% increase in new downloads per week after week. Sensor Tower has 13 million lifetime installs of the app, which means 10% arrived last week.

The company’s current model, the Quest 2, costs $ 299 or $ 399 depending on storage.

Oculus and the Metaverse

Oculus, which Facebook bought for $ 2.3 billion in 2014, has become a central part of Meta’s planned transformation from social media giant to pioneer of the metaverse. In October, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg presented his vision for the Metaverse, an immersive next-generation version of the Internet powered by virtual and augmented reality. Zuckerberg presented a detailed but vision not yet constructed of the metaverse through Oculus glasses.

Oculus’ Christmas success could also be attributed to a shortage of video game consoles like Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Nintendo’s OLED Switch, KeyBanc’s Patterson wrote in an analyst note. The global shortage of chips and strong consumer demand have made video game consoles, ever popular holiday gifts, hard to find.

Meta didn’t immediately respond to a request for data on its vacation sales, but its devices are some of the most popular in VR. Oculus is cheaper than most of the competition – HTC’s Vive Pro 2, for example, costs $ 799 – and is considered an industry standard.
