Several people are injured as at least three people were shot and two were seriously injured early Sunday morning in a shootout between would-be thieves and a marijuana grower at a warehouse in San Leandro, officials said.

San Leandro Police said around 4:20 a.m. they responded to a call about a burglary in progress in the 2000 block of Adams Avenue.

When officers arrived at the scene, they learned of a shootout between burglary suspects and people involved in the indoor marijuana grow operation.

Police say a site security guard was hit once by gunfire and is currently listed in stable condition. While a site manager was also hit by gunfire multiple times and is listed in critical condition.

Officials said a burglary suspect was located at the scene. He was shot at least once and is listed in critical condition.

Officers also located a U-Haul van that was fleeing the scene at high speed. The U-Haul did not yield to officers and a vehicle chase in Oakland began, police said.

During the chase, police say the suspects got out of the van and got into a newer silver Jeep. While changing the suspect vehicle, a suspect was caught on foot by officers, police said. The suspect in the incident was not injured in the shots. The U-Haul van was later recovered and collected as evidence, officials said.

Police said a Jeep was then chased for several minutes until it came to a stop, and two other suspects fled on foot. The chase lasted about 20 minutes as the two suspects who fled the Jeep on foot have yet to be captured, police said.

San Leandro police said they will work with city staff to determine if growing marijuana is legal.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the San Leandro Police Department at 510-577-2740.
